WIA and ate and ate and ate W

This past week, I have been eating like it's my job.  I have just been SO DARN HANGRY and I don't know why.  Buuuut I've been super dizzy at the same time so maybe that has something to do with it?

I could just lie to all of you guys and say that I never over eat, but that would just be a load of bull.  I'm human, I'm still struggling to find a healthy balance, and I feel as though that's okay.  It's all a learning game, right?

But it does seem to be a vicious cycle.  The more I over eat, the worse I feel about myself, and the worse I feel, the more I want to over eat.  I usually snap out of it before too long, but every time I go into this cycle, I fear that I am going to lose total control.  More about all of these food related issues I have in a later post though ...

Anyways, heres some of my recent eats.

As for summer staples? FRUIT! I can't get enough of it. Plus, it's a great way to cool down from the [lack of] heat [since Vancouver doesn't know how to go above 30 degrees]

That's it for the food portion ...

Now onto another favorite of mine: dogs.  We just got a new foster dog yesterday, her name is Tira, after the dessert Tiramisu. 

Her story:

Her owner was an elderly Italian man (hence her name) who lived alone.  One day, he got terribly sick and went into hospital.  He stayed in there for 10 days.  During that time, she was left alone in his house, with no food/water.  She ended up drinking from the toilet bowl, and scrounging for what kibble she could find.  After 10 days, she was discovered, and taken care of.  The elderly man came home, and everything was good for a while.  A little while later, he became ill and was unable to leave the house or call for help, so for another 10 days, they were both stranded in the house.  Unfortunately, the man passed away.  Tira was then taken in by the daughter, but it was soon realized it wouldn't work out, and that's how she came to us. 

Due to this, she has developed some abandonment issues, but this doesn't stop her from being a sweet, active, and playful dog.   

This story makes me realize how simple it can be for someone living alone to have something happen to them, and go un noticed.  *Shiver*


Onto a brighter note, I went downtown to see the fireworks, and thought that the fireworks would make a beautiful background for a picture.

How to: Salad Beasts



Ahh Salads.  They truly are one of my very favorite ways to get a crap load of veges into my diet.  For the better part of this last week, I have, admitedly been eating FAR TOO MUCH.  I woke up about 5 days ago feeling extremely dizzy, and from there on haven't been feeling like myself.  So what did I do to make myself feel better?

Eat.

My face off.

Until I felt sick.

What did [am] I eat[ing]? Lots of nuts, especially peanut butter and roasted cashews.  Lots of oatmeal, cooked with milk, maple syrup, and vanilla.  Lots of dates. My true weakness.  So even though the food itself is nutritious, too much of a good thing is never a good thing.  And by too much, we're talking peanut butter jars destroyed.  Poor things, didn't even see it coming. 

Anyways, today, I decided no matter what else I eat today, I am getting in some vegetables.  Enter my salad beast. 

For me, a salad needs five crucial ingredients to make it appealing for my taste buds AND my body. 

Step 1: Go green!

My choice of a base is kale, since it is a nice, substancial green that really packs a nutritious punch.  This may sound silly, but massaging the kale wilts it, and crushes some of the fibers, making it far more pallateable. 

The white stuff on the salad is cauliflour. 


Step 2: Protein

Whether your a vegetarian, vegan, or a meat eater, there is a protein choice out there.  I chose chicken and peas today.  Both pre cooked and frozen for my convenience.  I find that if I heat them up and add them to the salad, they wilt the kale, which is my preference.  I like my salads HOT!



Step 3: Sweeten things up!

Now this is totally up to you, but I personally like something a little sweet in my salad.  Today, I went with sundried tomatoes.  Some favorites are cranberries, dates, really any dried fruit. 


Step 4: Dress it up

Now this can really make or break a salad.  Today, I used equal parts of balsamic vinegar and homemade pea hummus.  I love using purred vegetables on top of my vegetables.  Yummy.  Most days, though, I will go with a simple oil and vinegar dressing.  Simple, yet delicious. 


Step 5: Get toasty warm

Who says salads need to be raw? Not me! I LOVE the mixture of textures when you add rroasted veges in a salad.  The zucchini below is one of my favorites to add.  Just 10 minutes under the broiler with some olive oil and sea salt is all you need.  Trust me, it puts the salad over the top. 


And there you have it! A delicious meal, rather than a few pieces of iceberg on the side of a main meal.

The End isn't Near, it's Here



So it's [not yet since I haven't officially crossed the stage yet] official, I have graduated high school.  What an amazing [anxiety ridden] experience.  Grade 12, by far, has been my favorite year.  I met some amazing people who I hope are in my life for a good time to come.


The above was part of my internship this summer; I'm attending events/photoshoots to see what goes on behind the scenes of a mall.  I feel so lucky to be given this opportunity.  I got it through a blogging competition, so I suppose it all goes hand in hand.  I had a blast helping out with this videoshoot.  I was DROOLING over all the makeup [all from Sephora].

                  

This is just a smidgen of all the clothes.  I was in heaven.

Now onto my eats ...





I was about to gobble this slice of banana up, but as I was about to do so, I noticed it resembled a smiley face. How cute is this! I love it when my food smiles back at me. 


I apoligize for the grossness/half eateness but it was just so delish! Oats cooked with cocoa, vanilla, almond milk, and a little salt.  Then topped with PB.  I swear it was a PB cup in oat form.


Me wearing my new favorite lipstick.  It's from the Revlon matte collection.  I bought it for grad, but decided I loved it so much, why not wear it for everyday life, right? Am I the only one who is wary of wearing such a bright colour? I'm afraid I'll look to dressed up.  Oh well, I bit the bullet and wore it anyways.

So this is what I call my work. Haha after I did this to my face all the little muchkins wanted a cat nose and whiskers; I should have thought that one through. 


I will never, ever get sick of this meal.  The salad has salad mix, edamame, black beans, candied walnuts, dates, tomatoes, ginger, and an apple miso dressing.  It's served with braised cabbage, avocado, salsa, and blackened chicken. Nutritious and delicious ;)


The food at grad was SPECTACULAR! It was like whole foods came and delivered.  I got a squash salad, green beens with shallots, salmon, a rye roll, salad, and potato salad.  So good, and from talking to the chef, it was all [mostly] local!



And for dessert? Haha some of my friends despise this gum, but I find it to be pretty darn tasty! What do you guys think of it? For me, it's still definitely gum, NOT DESSERT! Gimme the ice cream! But if you want to freshen your breath, it's for sure a good flavour.  It doesn't really taste like chocolate, just overly sweet mint gum? That's the only way I cant describe it.  I think I may have to try the other flavours now!

WIAW Snacky Tooth

For today's What I Ate Wednesday [Tuesday], I actually have a FULL day of eats to show you! So proud of myself.  Yesterday I wasn't feeling to great, so I decided to take a rest day, and not do my morning walk.  Somedays, we just need a break.  For me, I find taking a break difficult because I have this fear that I will just spiral downhill and end up sitting on the couch all day everyday.  Thankfully, I can say that today I am back in business, so I worried for nothing.  




This weeks WIAW is focused around sensible snacking.  I seem to be awesome with my choices during the day, but at night my snacking tooth gets the best of me.  My snack of choice? Dates dipped in nut butter.  It's deadly.  Honestly, I discovered the combo last summer and packed on some seriously unwanted pounds because of the quantities in which I ate it.  I try to stay away from this snack all together for now, but sometimes I swear the dates are calling my name. 

Breakfast  

I prepped myself a nice little breakfast.  What you see here is Tofu Faux French Toast.  I got the recipe idea when I was browsing Peas and Crayons, and since I had a brick of tofu sitting in my fridge, I decided to give it a go.  Let me tell you, this is SO GOOD! If you like tofu, give it a try.  I differed from the recipe a lot, considering we don't have eggs in the house, but it was still amazing. I ate a big ol' bunch of strawberries on the side, which were perfectly ripe.  $1 for a big container of them? Yes please!




Then because I like a lot of volume when I eat, I finished off the meal with some grapes.  Perfect and crispy.  

Since I have a feeling coffee has been triggering some unwanted panic attacks in me, I've decided to switch to tea for now.  Bring on the Almond milk. 



Snack/Lunch

I ended up being out of the house when lunch time rolled around, so my lunch looked more snack like.  Also, I woke up at 11 yesterday so my lunch was my breakfast really.  This apple and clif bar held me over really well.  I loooove me some peanut butter and chocolate.  




My mom bought this bag of Potato Puffs, and even for someone who despises most chips, I can say they were pretty darn good. The reminded me of pop chips.  Plus the nutrition stats are awesome! 280 calories ish for the whole bag? Score! 




Dinner


Dinner came in the form of a vege roast.  I tossed zucchini, kale, and brusell sprouts in olive oil, and roasted them at 400 for half an hour.  Them I add some spaghetti squash and ground turkey, and topped it all off with paprika.  Yum in a bowl.  


On the side I enjoyed some sweet potato wedges with coconut butter. Omg if you like Peanut Butter and sweet potatoes you will ADORE this combo.  I've been missing out big time.  


Snacks


As I've said before, my snacky tooth for sure gets the best of my at night.  Tonight, I had greek yogurt with blueberries and cocoa. 


Then that turned into frozen bananas with cocoa ... 


Which turned into molasses oats in an almost empty peanut butter jar.  I have seen so many bloggers eating OIAJ and I needed to jump on the band wagon.  OMG I'm glad I did, so dellish! The warm oats made the peanut butter all melty and scrumptious.  




Pair that with a few more grapes and you have a whole day of eats.  I definitely love to eat more at night. I know it may be because I don't eat as much during the day, but personally I just love night eating.  When I tend to eat more during the day, I feel deprived at night.  This style of eating works for me, but it's not for everyone.
